Why does 2026 have 13 full moons instead of 12?

A lunar cycle is about 29.5 days, slightly shorter than most calendar months, so about every 2.5 years one calendar month ends up containing two full moons. In 2026, that's May: a full moon on May 1 and another on May 31.
